Rust Silk Jacket

This men’s jacket is stunning in its simplicity.

The deep saturation of the fraying rust silk in concert with the wonderful woven metallic buttons dangling from the braided rope that edges the placket on both sides. The rope goes on to fashion the button loops on the opposing side. The clever method of using the braided rope to solve several problems is, while likely a common method of the day, none the less captivating.

I photographed the relationship between buttons and loops by parting them at the top and then bringing them together at the bottom of the image, but never actually buttoning them. The implied interaction of looping the button into its place isn’t necessary because we are doing it in our mind’s eye. The common interior fabrication of cotton or linen further offsets the luxe of the exterior treatment. The seam that runs from the collar seam down the back is a lovely counterbalance to the the line of the open placket. The seam runs from narrow at the top to wider at the bottom, and the placket is wide at the top to narrow at the bottom. It creates a subtle push-pull in an image that is so simple that every aspect counts.
