About Carin Ingalsbe

THE SHORT

Carin Ingalsbe is a photographer and a ceramicist.

While taking pictures is a daily vocation, her current focus in clay involves finding ways to blend stoneware and porcelain. Her focus is letting intention change all of the time, which is way harder than it sounds. She engages in a practice of moving from how the object is made, to an exploration of materials and then to the object itself.

She works out of a studio in Miami, where fending off the iguana who shares the veranda with her work wheel. This is part of the tropical routine.

He is a big, handsome Wile E. Coyote and always has his way.

Whatever he says, she is compelled to believe him.

THE LONG

I was born in the Bronx and ended up in Miami after a long “life loop” with my husband and two sons in Boston and Vermont.  I’ve moved through various disciplines, beginning with a focus in painting and printmaking at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts into a long stint in the photographic world. I currently have the privilege of working with clay. Each discipline shift is very natural and they all intertwine.

I draw every day.

I take pictures every day.

I work with clay every day.

I am devoted to the importance of pivoting with anything that wants looking at.

Studio is a moving meditation. On the best of days, it is a riding stream of consciousness.

Working with clay in particular is time travel and a privilege. All that the collective “we” has been before is in the clay.

My interest in the perceived value of things is perfectly suited to working with clay.

Things that I make are, in essence, dirt and a thought. Thoughts are fleeting, but time spent.

Making the pieces quantifiably all.

I am not an artist who shuns beauty; it is nourishment and it is everywhere.

Our life in Miami is one of respect for curiosity about everything and our deep devotion to street cats. We live with animals and think about them all of the time.

And like my work with clay, it is an honor to get to know them all.
