Diamonds
Music Symphony No. 3 in D major, Op. 29 (1875) by Peter Ilyitch Tschaiovsky
Choreography by George Balanchine (1967)
Jewels is unique in that the three act plotless ballet uses the music of three different composers. Blanchine used as his inspiration the artistry of the jewelry designer Claude Arpels.
“It is wonderful to see how our costume workshop, under Karinska’s direction, came so close to the quality of real stones.”
Mary Clarke and Clement Crisp have written, “If the entire imperial Russian inheritance of ballet were lost, Diamonds would still tell us of its essence.”
